Stuck on a desert island, what would be your go-to makeup product?
Those that know me well will know that I was blessed with super-long eyelashes, so my go-to product would have to be my mascara.
Millions of women use mascara every single day, it has been around since the 19th century and is used to add volume and colour, thickening and lengthening our lashes.
Did you know that your mascara expires after 3 months of opening? The moist, dark environment inside our tubes is a breeding ground for bacteria once expired, leaving our eyes and lashes vulnerable for infection.
Did you also know that not removing your mascara can cause problems for your lashes? You have probably heard us a million times talking about the importance of taking your make up off at night. Mascara contains numerous chemicals and leaving it on at night can cause your lashes to become stiff. It also has the potential to clog your pores and cause irritation. Inflammation around the eye lids can also lead to lash loss and in some cases scratched corneas.
Eyelashes are the one thing protecting your eyes, so isn’t it about time you did something to protect them?
Here are my top tips on how to take care of your lashes:
Carefully remove your mascara with an eye makeup remover every evening before going to bed. I recommend Nouveau lashes prebiotic eye makeup remover. This prebiotic gel contains ingredients to promote healthy skin and prevent irritation. Caffeine and Aloe vera help to minimise puffiness and under-eye dark circles and active ingredients thicken and condition the lashes.
Avoid vigorously rubbing the lashes this can cause damage to your lashes making them dry, brittle and weak.
Sunshine wind and rain all put stress on our eyelashes, and nobody wants the dryness that comes with this. Curling your lashes with an eyelash curler can also encourage the lashes to become weak and brittle and damaged.
Conditioning the lashes everyday with an eyelash serum is essential. I recommend Nouveau lash and brow conditioning serum. This is an advanced treatment that you can use every day to nourish and condition your lashes. It is also suitable for your brows, lash extensions and sensitive eyes. It is cruelty free and vegan friendly. I use mine as a primer every day before my mascara. You condition the hair on your head, your lashes are no different – just shorter.
Conditioning your lashes is a great way of keeping them strong and stable in the follicle, to help prevent lash loss.
Change your mascara every 3 months and ditch all the mascara you can’t remember last purchasing.
Take care not to pump your mascara, this increases air into your product and encourages it to dry out quicker.
